The eternal traveller

Dilip Kumar is ill. The first thing I thought about was this song from Musafir. What an unusual film with Dilip Kumar enacting vignettes. There was stillness in his demeanour here. Think about the contrast with Madhuban mein Radhika naache re. In fact, think about him in any song sequences and you will realise that he was one actor who did much more than lip sync; he emoted songs best.

For me his strongest characteristic has been his voice. Therefore, the song I have been thinking about and want to share with you has been sung by him, the only one in his career if I am not mistaken.

This needs silence. It needs you to wet your toes and be ready to get drowned. Pathos has rarely been so limpid.

The ABs and Sharukhs have grown up aping him. He is the original, the thespian maestro.

Although they spoke of Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand in the same breath, Dilip saab was the best. About the songs, there are a couple in Aan in which I thought he was outstanding.
