Face Trap

She touched my face

imprisoned it within her palms
small hands they were
that seemed to trap
nose, eyes, lips
breath

She released me

a few minutes in the dark
and then her fingers rolled over cheeks
the scent of lavendar
the feel of cream
moulding clay

She ran the length of neck

patted the collar bone
and slid hands towards the arch
that would lead to more of me
another phase
two moons standing apart

She left the candle burning

and asked me to keep eyes shut
it burned camphor and eucalyptus
blinking, I waved towards it
blocking out the light
she smiled in the dark as would the night

She left only to return

my face again imprisoned
within her small hands
I did not choke this time
as the eyes were soaked
and water entered my pores

She showed me the mirror

I was caged again

First reaction: I hate the image. Second reaction: This is creepy.
Third reaction: Is this about getting a facial?!

It's creepy...but I like it.

1. it's just...ugly and disturbing to me. really hate it a lot...infact...i wish you would remove it :/ sorry.

2. i'm not sure why. there seemed to be a sinister undertone to it when i first read it. now i dont find that as much but still wonder why she was so familiar with you and you so captive...

***** doesnt tell me anything :) come, lay more of yourself out.

must admit ... that a facial can be a very liberating experience ... with or without the camphor ... that it inspires poetry is priceless.

See above? 'Happy'?!

Anon 2:

All inspiration is priceless unless you pay for copyright of incidents and thoughts and dreams and dreams gone sour.

Heck, if imagination is important for readers, then will an explanation help?

no - no explanation is required, explanations interfere (read inhibit) with imagination - no, not all inspirations are priceless, only those that result in a creative endeavor or contribute positively to humans - some come with a hefty price tag - dreams gone sour also inspire as do sour dreams.

Anon 2 (just explaining)

Why does a poem have to be explained/dissected intellectually?

It's nice.

Happy Diwali ... may Ganesha and his consort do a little jig in your balcony.

I must admit that when I critique art/poetry/any creative work, part of it is also curiosity and most certainly dissection. But, then, it is my view. I am not really trying to figure out what the artiste meant. I have enough meanings, and most non-intellectual! Yet, I AM playing a bit of a titillater this time....

Happy Diwali to you, too

... may Ganesha and his consort do a little jig in your balcony.

What?? I can reconstruct a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? Sounds good.

PS: Good to see you here after a long time. I thought there is a jinx. I lost four commentators soon after they said they had got/started reading my book! No kidding.

No such luck ... the book jinx hasn't worked. A slew of meetings, travel, medicals, a 92 year-old hard-nosed mother, 9 demanding canines, Diwali ... at the end of the time there was no day left. Haven't started your book: read the first few pages, though.

Poetry/art/ creative work is felt along the artery and settles in the heart.

True, true. But two hearts would be different and then there can be the need for an interventist/stent. Blocked arteries. I am personally an 'emotional' writer, poetry or otherwise. So, my heart is with what you say. But I had to also admit my own attempts at dissection.

The fact that poetry can be inspired by the most mundane acts is what lends it potency and poignancy.

PS: Good to hear about the non-jinx about the book.
