You tell me. Is racism a religion, too? There are a few who might justify it using religion, but omit to mention that it is what they learned in their immediate surroundings that affected them. About onlookers, Mark has answered it pretty much.

Mark:

God as male is also part of the 'provider' attitude prevalent in most societies. Even among deities, the goddess is more of a nurturer or one correcting the wrongs. Essentially, a responder.

FVnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16761020.post-52029000475012943552014-06-01T15:08:00.721+05:302014-06-01T15:08:00.721+05:30Honor or dishonor killing-whatever we call-is dish...Honor or dishonor killing-whatever we call-is disheartening, shameful and most ugly act against humanity.Sometimes its fully as in this case and most of times partially, more brutal than fully in a way that kills one's soul and challenges the very existence of the victim. As long as the beast which resided in the patriarchy mindset is killed or taken care-of seriously there is no solution.Being a male I feel shame.jiturajgorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17357330819451319528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16761020.post-11266444078706902212014-05-30T05:04:31.478+05:302014-05-30T05:04:31.478+05:30Tacky,

That said, I wouldn't discount the prospect of the odd poseur. :)

>>What part does religion play in such behavior?<<

It seems more . . . well, "cultural" rather than religious by Farzana's detail.

>>Why do some men believe God is male?<<

God as male still mirrors the hierarchy in many families. This would seem to be changing; though obviously not soon enough for Mrs. Parveen.

>>Why do onlookers remain passive?<<

In her first example of the extremity of the patriarchal at work, Farzana mentions that family members had guns. That made it police (and/or army business). In the second example, Aranza's daughter's refusal to bow to her father's wishes (however implicit, as it seems unlikely she'd been unaware of his prejudices) directly challenged his authority (however assumed) as head-of-household. For some men, that's all they got. It is unfortunate for the 15-year old girl to be the daughter of one such as he; but, unless she brings him up on charges, a legal dependency exists between them for another three years. In your example of onlooker passivity, the "witness" heard a scream and a thud. Certainly enough to give pause and, perhaps, cause to either inquire at the door and/or alert the police; however, her previous dealings with the neighbor(s) are not without relevance.

>>Go figure.<<

Can't. Will men comment?
What part does religion play in such behavior?
Why do some men believe God is male?
Why do onlookers remain passive? There is a murder case in court these days. A neighbor heard a scream, "..Oh, don't" and a heard a thud. She did not call the police or check on the neighbor. Two days later the parents discovered three bodies when they received no answer to their telephone calls. The witness said she did not "want to appear nosy."
Go figure.Tackyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08022529883108566386noreply@blogger.com
