It has more to do with the symbolism - of two joined as one ... in the middle, clumsy and tedious as the onion might seem. I can already see the technical difficulties, of one failing to open or close, then the whole union falls apart. Whats wrong with the old faithful a giant all encompassing piece of rain gear? One more gadget that seem like a good idea ... once.
